CROSSPOST PLEASE! ANY HELP IS NEEDED AND WELCOME...
Twisted Whisker Sanctuary needs your help now
While this message is from Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), please excuse that we seem to make a habit of helping our fellow rescuers. After all they are all a part of the work we do, too, and we all try to do our best to help homeless animals. In this case we are making an urgent appeal for a woman and her sanctuary that has benefitted not only ARNO, but other animal organizations and rescue groups in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina.
Kris Rieck formed her North Carolina sanctuary, a lifelong dream, before Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Formerly a resident of Virginia and retired from the military, Kris purchased property in a remote area with beautiful rolling hills near Pilot Mountain, NC. Kris' lifelong dream does not exactly fit the norm... she built a sanctuary for special needs animals, i.e. the unadoptables. She employs local resident animal lovers to help her with the daily chores. Life did seem wonderful. Kris, director of Twisted Whisker Sanctuary (TWS), works as an elementary school teacher and uses her income to sustain the sanctuary, Katrina interrupted her own business of life-saving work, leaving TWS in good hands with the animal caretakers. Kris came for months helping to rescue animals from the floodwaters or found walking the streets dehydrated and starving. Trips home meant trips home with abandoned animals who needed more help than just veterinary medical care. They were the abandoned pets with bowel disease, diabetes, blind, FIV and FeL positive, dogs with special needs and deformities from the storm, the aged... the list goes on. Over half of Twisted Whisker's population are animals rescued from Katrina and Rita.
Now as a result of a sudden divorce, and unexpected foreclosure setting in on her current location, Kris has purchased a meager (by her previous homestead) house and property just down the road abutting a state forest. The sheds must all be moved, kennels redone at the new place, and animals moved. TWS has outside heated shelters built at an expense of $25,000 each... one for FIV cats, one for FeL cats, and one for ferals. Each of the houses was enclosed in high fencing, but givien plenty of property within the fenced area for pets to roam and bask in the sunshine. These structures must be taken apart and moved to the new property.
Kris has spent her savings of $40,000 getting the new property staged to move the animals and rebuild the dog runs and kennels, which could not be moved from the old property. Now she needs our help to move the cat houses and pay carpenters to put them back together, as well as fences to enclose the goats, sheep and other farm animals that make Twisted Whisker their home. She estimates that about $10,000 is the super crunch that is needed now. Another $15,000 to build all the extra space (farmhouse is a quarter size of the old house) she will need at this new farm, but that can wait. She must move the shelter outbuildings and get everything ready for the beginning of August when the old property will be seized and locked up. The $10,000 will pay the contractors, carpenters, post hole diggers, fence installers, electricians, trash haulers and move the existing three buildings. Lowe's in her area is donating part of the building materials, but more materials are needed. The donations used mostly for extraordinary vet care.
Twisted Whisker also needs experienced animal care and animal handlers to come for a few days or a week and help move the animals safely to their new spots. Come and camp out with your friends or family and help this wonderful woman! Beautiful scenery, beautiful weather, and you will be helping someone who has literally helped hundreds of animals who would have had no other chance at a good life.
* Please donate $25 today to help Twisted Whisker continue their work with their special needs pets. If only 400 people reading this message give $25, she will have the financial crunch met for the moving of the facilities. Donate thru our PayPal site and 'mark' TWISTED WHISKER in the notes/comments section or anywhere in the order, so we know that donation is for Kris. Any amount is more than welcome, you will be blessed for helping this wonderful woman!
* Please consider coming to volunteer and come camp out with friends to lend a hand. If you want to volunteer please call Kris at 336.756.2833. She will be very glad to hear from anyone who can help! Animal handlers, rescuers, vet techs, vets... are always needed. Kris needs help with painting, fencing, minor carpentry and general chores (feed and care for the animals before and during the move). Come on down (or up!) and lend a hand! Everyone and anyone is welcome.
